Authorities said the preliminary investigation indicates Kandula “intentionally crashed” into the bollards outside Lafayette Park. The 19-year-old Missouri man accused of driving a truck into barriers near the White House made incriminating statements that indicated to investigators that he was seeking to harm the president, officials said Tuesday. After driving onto Lafayette Square, he made threatening statements aimed at Mr. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the source said. The officer then ordered the suspect to the ground and searched him, finding a Missouri driver's license, per the court documents.

The officer then witnessed the suspect, identified as Kandula, walking around to the back of the U-Haul and pulling out a flag with a Nazi swastika and a backpack, the documents state. The driver, identified as Noah Green of Virginia, got out of the car with a knife and lunged at the officers, police said. Among the items that appear to be from the truck are a flag of what appears to be a swastika, a black backpack and a roll of duct tape. There were no red flags on Kandula's vehicle rental record that would have prevented him from being able to rent a U-Haul, the company said.

In Los Angeles, the LAPD was involved in more than 4,200 police pursuits over a five-year period, according to a report prepared by the department that covered data from 2018 through this April. Video from NewsChopper 4 Alpha showed the front tires of the U-Haul truck had been blown out, possibly due to a spike strip that had been deployed by CHP on the freeway as the pursuit headed back to Buena Park. A burglary suspect being chased by law enforcement crashed into two vehicles in South Los Angeles early Wednesday, killing one of the innocent drivers. Chris Zaboji, a witness to the crash, posted a brief video to social media showing the truck driving into the barriers. After crashing once, Zaboji said the driver hit the barricades a second time.

The white U-Haul box truck crashed into the barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square, a few hundred feet from the White House, just before 10 p.m. A law enforcement official told NBC News that the suspect made threatening statements about the White House at the scene but was quickly detained. The truck did not contain weapons or explosives, the official said, without providing further details.

A U-Haul spokesperson said he picked up the truck from a Herndon, Virginia store with a license and valid payment. But the spokesperson wouldn’t share any safety or security changes the company is considering. Court documents stated Kandula claimed to have arrived at Dulles from St. Louis that same night on a one-way ticket. Roadways and walkways around the area were closed off while police investigated.

A Rockwood School District official in Missouri confirmed Sai Varshith Kandula graduated from Marquette High School early in January 2022. He appeared in court Tuesday with a slim build, a little longer hair, and beard. The truck was cleared for potential explosives, a law enforcement official said. There were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, said in a statement. "U-Haul has been in close contact with the FBI and Secret Service and is cooperating with law enforcement to ensure their investigative needs are met,” the spokesperson said in an email.

The news agency Reuters also published an image of a red Nazi flag with a swastika laid out on the floor by the U-Haul truck, along with other pieces of evidence. Kandula later told Secret Service agents that he’d flown from St. Louis on a one-way ticket that night after months of planning. He wanted to “get to the White House, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation,” and he said he would “kill the president, if that’s what I have to do,” charges state. Kandula is currently charged with one federal count of depredation of property of the U.S. in excess of $1,000, according to court documents obtained by CBS News. He is expected to be transferred to federal court for a hearing Wednesday, CBS News learned. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver - who has not been publicly identified - may have intentionally struck the barrier, the Secret Service later said.
